Installing a Modem for Windows 2000

Step 1 of 12
  • Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  • Double-click the Control Panel icon.
  • Double-click the Phone and Modems icon.
  • The following window will open.
  • Click once on the Modems tab.

  • This window will list any modems you may already have installed in your system.
  • To add a modem, click the Add button at the bottom of the window.

  • Do not place a tick in the box titled Don't detect my modem.
  • Click the Next button.

  • Windows will now attempt to detect your modem by scanning each of the communications ports in your computer.

  • If Windows correctly identifies your modem you will see the following window displayed. Click the Finish button then move to Step 12.
  • If you do not see this window, move to the next step.

  • If Windows did not find your modem you will see the following window.
  • Click the Next button.

  • Scroll through the list of manufacturers in the left hand column. If the manufacturer for your modem is listed, click once on that manufacturer. The list of modems will change in the right hand column. If your modem is listed, click on its entry once then click the Next button. Move to Step 10.
  • If your modem is not listed and you do not have a disk for your modem, click on Standard Modem Types from the left hand column. Then click once on the modem that most closely matches yours from the list on the right hand side. Click the Next button. Move to Step 10.
  • If you have a disk for your modem, click the Have Disk button and move to the next step.

  • Insert the disk that contains your modem software into the disk drive.
  • Select the correct drive letter and folder that contains the modem software. You may need to use the browse button to change drive letters or folders.
  • Click the OK button and move to the next step.
Step 9 of 12
  • Your modem will now be listed. If the correct modem is not listed here, click the Have Disk button again and ensure that you have selected the correct drive and/or folder.
  • Click the Next button.
Step 10 of 12
  • Windows will now ask which communications (COM) port you want the modem to communicate through.
  • External modems are usually connnected through COM1 or COM2.
  • Internal modems are usually connected through COM3 or COM4.
  • Select the COM port that you want to use then click the Next button.
Step 11 of 12
  • Your modem software has now been installed. Click the Finish button to finalise the settings.
Step 12 of 12
  • Click the OK button to close the Modem Properties window.
